Lymphatic complications after varicose veins surgery: risk factors and how to avoid them.
Tue, 21 Feb 2012 21:12:02 +0100 | Phlebology
CONCLUSION: LC after VVs surgery is not rare but frequently limited to lymphocele on limbs. Older age, more advanced clinical stage and obesity were associated with a higher frequency of LC. A mini-invasive and selective surgery has significantly reduced the occurrence of LC.

The relevance of the natural history of varicose veins and refunded care.
Tue, 21 Feb 2012 21:12:02 +0100 | Phlebology
In conclusion, there is evidence from the literature that a high proportion of patients with uncomplicated VVs in the clinical, aetiological, anatomical and pathophysiological classification (CEAP Clinical Class 2) will progress to CVI if untreated. VVs have a negative impact on QOL and clinical symptoms. VV patients with CVI (C3-C6) as well as those C2 patients with severe clinical symptoms and impaired QOL due to CVD should be treated with ablation of the VVs in a refunded care system.

Weight loss advice 'ignores body changes'
Tue, 21 Feb 2012 17:30:00 +0100 | NHS News Feed
Losing is weight “twice as hard as previously thought”, according to media reports today. Current government weight-loss guidelines “mislead” overweight people about the effort needed to lose weight and dieting rules “don’t take into account changes in metabolism that occur when you lose weight”, several newspapers said.
The reports are based on a recent conference presentation in which obesity researchers reportedly said that current weight-loss guidelines fail to take into account the changes in metabolism the researchers identified. They said that this means weight loss takes twice the time predicted by current guidelines.
However, there is as yet no officially sanctioned way to work out a bespoke weight-loss programme for yourself, which is why if you’re worried about ...

Obesity and its associated disease: a role for microbiota?
Tue, 21 Feb 2012 16:15:54 +0100 | Neurogastroenterology and Motility
AbstractBackground Gut microbiota have recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of the obesity and its related metabolic diseases. A variety of factors including diet, genetic background, environment and host innate and adaptive immune responses define an individual’s gut microbiota.Purpose In this review we outline potential mechanisms by which gut microbiota can contribute to the development of obesity focusing on specific processes such as microbial energy extraction, microbiota induced‐inflammation and regulation of appetite. We review the current understanding of each of these processes on regulating metabolism and examine potential therapeutic strategies for the treatment or prevention of the metabolic syndrome. We explore the hypothesis that alteration in gut microbiot...

Different Susceptibility to Insulin Resistance and Fatty Liver Depending on the Combination of TNF-α C-857T and Adiponectin G+276T Gene Polymorphisms in Japanese Subjects with Type 2 Diabetes.
Tue, 21 Feb 2012 15:30:02 +0100 | The Tohoku Journal of Experimental Medicine
In this study, we examined effects of these polymorphisms on clinical markers of insulin resistance and fatty liver (a liver/spleen CT ratio < 0.9). These polymorphisms were determined in 342 Japanese subjects with type 2 diabetes. The liver/spleen CT ratio was lower in the subjects with the adiponectin +276G/G genotype than that in the subjects with the +276T allele (P < 0.05), indicating that fat accumulation in the liver is associated with the +276G/G genotype. Multiple comparisons among the 4 combinations of each polymorphism of the TNF-α and adiponectin genes revealed a significant difference in the liver/spleen CT ratio (P < 0.05) among the 4 groups, indicating that the gene combinations influence the degree of fat accumulation in the liver. The subjects carrying the TNF-α...
